An Australian Army reservist accused of fighting for the Ukrainian military will face court in Adelaide today.

A 25-year-old man has made history as the first individual to face charges under a specific defense legislation, following allegations of unauthorized work with a foreign military.

The investigation was launched by federal police after the Department of Defence brought the case to their attention. The young man, who had been overseas, returned to Australian soil in January.

It’s alleged the Felixstow man travelled to Ukraine in May 2025 to serve as a drone operator for Ukraine’s armed forces in the war with Russia.

This particular defense legislation strictly outlines the conditions under which individuals can engage in activities with foreign military entities, governments, or companies, requiring explicit authorization.

Last Thursday, April 2, authorities executed a search warrant at a residence in Felixstow. During the search, they confiscated multiple electronic devices, including a mobile phone and a laptop.

If found guilty, the man could face up to 20 years in prison. (AFP)
