The Aurora Australis, also known as the southern lights, could be seen from vantage points along the south and west coasts of the state.
Photographers made the most of the opportunity, with the phenomena visible between 8pm and 9pm on Tuesday.
Simon Deluca-Cardillo captured hues of yellow and orange illuminating the night sky in a time lapse video at Waitpinga Beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
“That’s the best I’ve captured,” he said.
“The other times it just had a bit of a red glow to the sky.”
The light display was also spotted from Petrel Cove at Encounter Bay.

“It’s super magical,” photographer Braydon Thomson said.
“I wanted to plan a trip to Tassie so seeing it in your own backyard is huge.”
The Aurora Australis is also is the lesser known sibling of the world-famous Aurora Borealis.
The phenomenon is most likely to appear in March and September due to the earth’s orientation relative to the sun and the likelihood of solar storms.
