A woman from Mexico has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for her involvement in the murder of Australian siblings Jake and Callum Robinson, along with their American companion, in northern Mexico.

The Robinson brothers, together with their friend Jack Carter Rhoad from the United States, were on a surfing adventure in the Baja California area, close to Ensenada, when they were tragically killed in April of last year.

Overnight Ari Gisell, 23, pleaded guilty to instigating the violent assault, the BBC reports.

During the trial, it was revealed that Ari Gisell had expressed a desire for the tires from the surfers’ vehicle. She reportedly instructed her then-partner, Jesús Gerardo, to “get me a good phone and good tires for my pickup truck.”

In accordance with Mexican legal practices, the last names of the individuals involved were not disclosed during the court proceedings.

Jesús Gerardo, along with accomplices Irineo Francisco and Ángel Jesús, tracked down the tourists’ vehicle to their campsite. There, they robbed the group and subsequently shot them.

The cases against these three men remain before the courts.

The parents of the Robinson brothers gave emotional statements via video link, the ABC reports.

“We dreamed of seeing them grow older, of having children. That’s all taken now,” said their mother Debra Robinson.

“We live with their absence.”

A tearful Ari Gisel apologised in court, saying “nothing I can say will compensate you or give you peace”.

The killings of the Robinson brothers, who grew up in Perth, shocked Australia.

Months after the deaths, the brothers’ parents Debra and Martin Robinson set up a non-profit charity in their sons’ names aimed at helping young people make positive changes in their lives.
