In a heartwarming celebration, Colin Wagener, Australia’s most senior World War II veteran, recently marked his 108th birthday at his home in the picturesque Adelaide Hills.

During the war, Wagener served with distinction as a signaller, a role crucial to military communications. His creative side shone through as well, as he took up photography in his spare time. Despite the challenges of wartime scarcity, Wagener resourcefully swapped cigarette rations to acquire the necessary materials for developing his photos.

Among the vivid memories that linger with him, one stands out that wasn’t captured on film: the moment he returned to Adelaide after six long years of service. He humorously recalls his father’s less-than-tactful greeting, “Dad said I stink,” bringing a touch of levity to his recollections of the past.

On his special day, Wagener welcomed guests to his Highland Valley property, where he continues to lead an active life. Remarkably, he still enjoys the thrill of riding his motorbike, embodying a spirit of vitality and resilience that has defined his remarkable journey.

When asked about his longevity, he offered simple advice: avoid smoking and alcohol, and keep moving. 

“Well, things crop up, you know,” he said. 

“Cutting the lawn or mowing the hedge. I got about 60 acres I gotta look after.”

While Mr Wagener is not focused on reaching his 110th birthday, he remains dedicated to staying active and taking each day as it comes – as well as enjoying Tim Tams, which he was gifted 111 of to mark today’s milestone.
