A cold case search for the remains of a South Australian woman who disappeared almost 40 years ago has been reignited, with detectives scouring a large property in the state’s south-east.

Margaret Bernie, aged 34, vanished from her residence in Mount Gambier on January 23, 1988.

Her disappearance was reported by her sister on February 10 of the same year, after weeks went by without any communication from Bernie.

The police suspect she was the victim of foul play.

In a renewed effort, detectives and local SES volunteers have turned their attention to a property on Burnda Street in Compton, located just west of Mount Gambier.

Search teams are dedicating today and tomorrow to combing through the one-square-kilometer property, as part of a re-evaluation of the evidence in this long-standing cold case.

Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said there are likely to be individuals in the Mount Gambier and South-East community who know what happened to Margaret.

“We would encourage those people to come forward and speak with police,” he said.
