Jan Laczynski said he had felt it was important to return to Bali for the anniversary memorial.

But, he told Today, he was shocked at how organisers chose to focus the event.

“It should have been about the 202 people and 88 Australians (killed in the attack),” he said.

“The focus should have been on them, on this memorial behind us, not having Umar Patek and other terrorists paraded as some heroes, and to show the actual footage of the actual bombs exploding and the fire and aftermath was just — I just don’t understand it.”

Patek was jailed for 20 years for his role in the bomb plot, but could possibly walk free after serving just 11, with authorities claiming he has reformed behind bars.

Laczynski said that adding further to the pain of last night’s memorial, the video was played at 11pm – “20 years to the moment” since the attack.

“I actually walked away from here towards the Sari Club area, because I just didn’t want to see that,” Laczynski said.

“And then I saw, like, a couple of girls and other people were just running, crying. They were in tears seeing that. It was very traumatic and it just didn’t make any sense.”

Laczynski said he had felt it was important to come to Bali for a “moment of reflection” during the anniversary.

“You never get any closure, there is no end point, there is no finish line to these memorials,” he said.

“But for me 20 years I just wanted to have a quiet moment of reflection.”

He said until the video had played, the entire event had provided a good opportunity for people to pay tribute to the victims.

“All the trauma that happened over the years was just being replayed for us, it just made no sense,” he said.

“We were supposed to be lighting candles here and instead we were all just walking away.

“I mean, it was just bizarre. That is the only word I have got. I don’t understand why they would have done it. It made no sense, it was painful to watch, very, very painful to watch.”
