The interview swiftly cut back to the newsreader in London. The BBC re-established contact with the reporter when he had reached a bomb shelter with his crew a little over an hour later, it said on its website.

About 8am on Monday (4pm AEDT) multiple loud explosions in Kyiv began being reported by both journalists and civilians.

It has since been confirmed by local authorities that at least four Russian missiles have struck the capital, killing at least eight civilians and injuring 24.

Kyiv’s local mayor has also said critical infrastructure has been hit, saying “the capital is under attack from Russian terrorists”.
