NSW police have made their first arrest as part of a new taskforce aimed at bringing down Sydney’s underworld war, on the same day a family farewelled a tradie allegedly caught in the crossfire.

Police from the newly established Taskforce Falcon yesterday arrested a 16-year-old boy who they allege delivered a so-called “kill car” to a suspected hit team in Sydney’s west.

Police allege the boy was behind the wheel of a stolen Mercedes in Guildford, where they allegedly discovered a stash of weapons including a fully loaded AR-15 assault rifle, a jerry can filled with fuel, a handgun and bullets, face masks and cable ties.

“It was obviously put to be used a serious offence, we suspect an attempted murder,” superintendent Jason Box said.

The interception of the “kill car” may have thwarted a potential attack, but police fear a hit team is still out there with a victim in their sights.

The teenager’s arrest confirms a disturbing release of the underworld recruiting younger people to set the stage for a hit.

“It’s extremely serious [what] they are involved in – the repercussions are enormous for them, Detective Superintendent Jason Box said.

The 16-year-old today faced court on charges including stealing a motor vehicle, disposing of a motor vehicle and driving without licence.

The 23-year-old had no criminal record and police suspect his death may have been a result of mistaken identity.

Today Versace’s friends and family gathered at a Punchbowl church to lay him to rest.
