“Somehow, we managed to get up and walk away, but it definitely rattled us,” Billings told 9News.

Their bikes, worth tens of thousands of dollars, were badly damaged, but remarkably the riders escaped with only minor injuries.

“If we hit that wire at 40 kilometres… you know it’s serious injury guaranteed… a minimum broken collar bone or wrist,” Billings said.

It’s one of two dangerous incidents of its kind in less than a week, after a female cyclist was also ensnared by a wire.

“Riders already have a lot to worry about without having to deal with boobie traps like these,” Bailey Underwood from Bike S.A. said

In South Australia, intending to cause serious harm is a criminal offence which could see those caught face a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison.
