A courageous individual took cover behind a silver car and stealthily approached the suspected gunman. In a swift move, he lunged and secured the gunman in a headlock.
The unidentified hero grappled with the assailant until the firearm was wrested from his grasp.
With the weapon now in hand, the brave man turned it on the gunman, who staggered backward, raising his hands defensively as he retreated.
Despite the tense moment, the courageous bystander did not discharge the weapon but instead called for help.
Tragically, at least 12 individuals lost their lives and several others were injured when two gunmen opened fire at a bustling beach. Eyewitness footage captured the shooters firing from a footbridge near the southern end of Campbell Parade just before 7 p.m. (AEDT).
Police have confirmed more than 20 people have been shot.
One of the shooters was killed and the other was critically injured and in police custody.
Police cautioned that the bridge the shooters used may have had explosives hidden on. People were warned to keep away as it was searched.
It’s understood that young children are among the more than a dozen people injured.
“I saw children, I saw an elderly woman,” 9News reporter Damien Ryan said from the scene.
