A British rail worker has been praised as a hero after he was gravely injured in a mass stabbing on a train, where his brave actions helped save numerous lives.

Last Saturday, Samir Zitouni, aged 48, courageously intervened to protect passengers during a terrifying knife attack on a train heading to London.

According to the British Transport Police, Zitouni, who works as a customer host, is currently in a “critically unwell” state yet remains stable in the hospital. Meanwhile, three other individuals injured in the attack are also in stable condition.

In a heartfelt statement, Zitouni’s family expressed how “immensely proud” they are of his bravery and selflessness.

“We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, and by the many well wishes for his recovery,” the family shared, reflecting the widespread admiration for his actions.

“The police called him a hero on Saturday evening, but to us he’s always been a hero.”

Zitouni has worked for London North Eastern Rail (LNER) for more than 20 years.

It’s believed he was one of the first people aboard the train to confront the attacker and shielded a girl, leaving him wounded.

David Horne, LNER managing director, praised his actions.

“In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him.

“His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him, and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening.”

UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told the BBC the courage shown by Zitouni was “utterly remarkable” after putting himself “in harm’s way”.

Anthony Williams, 32, was charged with 10 counts of attempted murder over the train stabbing and a count of attempted murder in connection with an attack in London last Saturday.
