A projectile recently struck within the confines of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, according to security officials. The incident occurred in the Green Zone, a heavily fortified area in central Baghdad that houses both Iraqi government offices and foreign embassies. These officials, requesting anonymity due to restrictions on speaking with the media, provided the information.
Footage obtained by The Associated Press captured smoke rising from within the embassy compound, indicating the impact of the attack.
On Friday, the embassy reiterated its Level 4 security alert for Iraq. This alert underscores the ongoing threats posed by Iran and Iran-aligned militia groups, which have historically targeted U.S. citizens, interests, and infrastructure. The warning emphasized that such groups “may continue to target them.”
The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, one of the largest American diplomatic missions worldwide, has frequently been the focus of attacks by rockets and drones, primarily by militias affiliated with Iran.
Recently, these groups have intensified their attacks on bases that host U.S. and coalition forces, elevating security concerns in the region.
A drone strike in northern Iraq on Thursday killed a French soldier and wounded several others stationed there as part of an international coalition.
“When it’s over –– and I don’t think it’s going to be long –– when it’s over, this is going to bounce back so fast,” the president said.
In a Truth Social post, the US president said he had destroyed every military target on what he described as “Iran’s crown jewel”.
