A 71-year-old British man has been taken into custody following accusations of assault aboard a cruise ship. The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday while the vessel was navigating international waters.
Authorities are treating the matter seriously, as the man could face a prison sentence of up to five years if found guilty of the alleged assault. Federal police have clarified that the incident happened beyond Australia’s “outer adjacent area,” yet it remains within the jurisdiction of the Crimes at Sea Act.
Detective Acting Superintendent Trevor Robinson of the Australian Federal Police emphasized the importance of maintaining safety on international cruise ships. He reiterated that ensuring the well-being of passengers and crew is a top priority.
According to federal police, the alleged crime took place at sea outside Australia’s “outer adjacent area”, but is still covered by the Crimes at Sea Act.
AFP Detective acting Superintendent Trevor Robinson said safety on board international vessels was paramount.
“The repercussions of alleged criminal behaviour remain even when an offence occurs at sea,” he said.
“Where Australian law applies under the Crimes at Sea framework, the AFP will move swiftly to investigate incidents and bring alleged offenders before the courts,” he said.
“We work closely with cruise operators and maritime partners to ensure the safety of passengers and crew, and to make it clear unlawful behaviour on vessels connected to Australia will be addressed.”
