Speculation is mounting Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will call the 2025 federal election as early as tomorrow.

While it has been widely reported Albanese could call the election this weekend in the wake of the budget, that move may even be brought forward.

An announcement tomorrow would most likely result in Australians heading to the polls on May 3.

In a possible sign of things to come, the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet shared a post on X stating the government is now in “caretaker mode”, which happens when the House of Representatives is dissolved following an election being called.

The post was quickly deleted just moments later, the ABC reports.

Another possible date the election could fall on is May 11 and the absolute latest date he could call the election for would be May 17.

Calling an election tomorrow could be a strategic move to redirect attention from the Coalition’s budget reply which is set to take place later this evening.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said in response the federal government would not match Dutton’s excise pledge.
