A shopping centre in Melbourne‘s west has been thrust into lockdown after dozens of students clashed in an after-school brawl.

Chaos erupted at the Pacific Werribee Shopping Centre in Hoppers Crossing as shoppers were caught off guard by a significant brawl around 4:30 p.m.

Video footage captures a frenzied scene where over 50 youths formed a circle around a group of females engaged in a fierce exchange of punches and kicks, targeting other girls who were on the ground.

The altercation involved students from various schools, unfolding dramatically in front of startled shoppers who were busy with last-minute Easter preparations.

As the situation escalated, witnesses reported to 9News that shoppers sought refuge in nearby stores, some even hiding in storerooms during the lockdown.

To regain control, police intervened by deploying capsicum spray, which effectively scattered the crowd as the students quickly fled the area.

No arrests have been made and no injuries have been reported, police said.

The centre has since reopened, but there remains a significant police presence.
