Drivers in Melbourne have been left terrified after armed men clashed in the middle of a busy freeway.

The pandemonium erupted around 2:30 PM yesterday when two vehicles lost control while maneuvering through traffic on the Monash Freeway in Narre Warren, located in Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs.

A group of masked men, some wielding machetes and metal rods, emerged from the vehicles and started a brawl right in the middle of the freeway.

Footage captured on a phone shows several of these individuals approaching a car with a family inside, creating a tense and frightening situation.

As the altercation unfolded, some innocent motorists attempted to speed away, while others quickly reversed to reach a nearby exit.

By the time police arrived at the scene, most of the men had fled into nearby bushland.

In response to the incident, three lanes of the freeway were shut down as authorities deployed the dog squad to assist in searching the area.

Only one man was questioned and was released without charge.

There were no injuries reported during the incident.

Housing Minister Harriet Shing insisted Victoria’s ban on machetes was having a positive impact on crime, but conceded incidents like this highlight areas for improvement.

“The vast majority of people who call Victoria home have an experience of safety, cohesion and connectedness,” she said.

“There’s always more work to do, however.”
