In the world of web development, browser compatibility has often been a thorn in the side of developers. This is particularly true for those who have had to navigate the quirks of Internet Explorer (IE). Despite its decline in usage, the legacy of IE continues to impact how websites are coded and maintained.

Internet Explorer, especially its older versions, has long been notorious for its lack of support for modern web standards. This has forced developers to write additional code, often using conditional comments, to ensure their sites render correctly for users still relying on this outdated browser. Such comments are particularly prevalent in HTML and CSS to address specific issues that arise with IE.

The challenge comes from the fact that each version of IE behaves differently. For example, IE 8 and 9 both have their own sets of peculiarities, resulting in the need for distinct solutions to unique problems. While many have moved on to more modern browsers, the residual need to cater to users of IE remains a necessary evil for some sectors, particularly those serving corporate clients who may not have upgraded their systems.

Despite the frustrations associated with Internet Explorer, it is essential to recognize the advancements in web technology that have emerged as a result. The push for better standards compliance and cross-browser compatibility has driven innovation, leading to the more consistent and reliable web experiences we enjoy today.

As we move forward, the industry continues to encourage the use of modern browsers that adhere to current web standards. This shift not only simplifies the development process but also enhances security and performance for users. While the era of Internet Explorer is drawing to a close, its influence will linger, reminding developers of the evolution of the web and the importance of adaptability in technology.

However, in the 1970s Sir Cliff turned down the chance to meet his hero as the American had become fat.

Sir Cliff was put in his place by Alison Hammond on This Morning in November 2023 after he fat-shamed Elvis.

During his interview the singer revealed that he once turned down the opportunity to meet the rock and roll legend because he had ‘put on weight.’

Cliff, who only eats one meal per day, began: ‘I got the opportunity to meet him via a journalist who knew I was heavily influenced by him.

‘But I turned it down because I knew he had put on lots of weight and I thought, “If I am having a photo with him and I have it hanging on my refrigerator, of course he’s got to look good.”‘

He concluded: ‘And I put it off and, of course, then he died.’

Alison responded: ‘You should never have put it off just because they’re a little bit heavier.’

Cliff then explained to the viewers: ‘You should take the chance to meet your idols even if they’ve put on weight.’

‘Is that why you don’t want me at your house?’ Alison hit back, before changing the topic.

Elsewhere in the interview, Cliff revealed that he only eats one meal a day as he explained: ‘It’s true, I do only have one meal a day. I stick with that.

‘I realise that I’m just not hungry. I have yoghurt with some muesli for breakfast then come lunch I’m just not hungry.’

Elvis famously passed away in August 1977 at the age of 42, dependent on prescription drugs.
