One of the big four banks is under fire for handing out a commemorative pin to a dedicated employee who worked there for almost half a century.
A man named Nick claimed his mother just completed 45 years of service with Commonwealth Bank.

A TikTok user, known by the handle @dreamfueltribe, recently shared a video alleging that a bank recognized a long-serving employee’s milestone with merely flowers and a small pin. The video has since garnered over 10,000 views.

“I was really disappointed for her,” he expressed to nine.com.au, reflecting on the situation. “After such a lengthy service, receiving only a small token felt inadequate. While it’s important not to have high expectations, especially from large corporations, small gestures can significantly impact how valued employees feel in their workplace.”

In his TikTok video, Nick commented that the pin serves as a reminder to Australian workers that they are “just numbers in the system.”

In the clip Nick posted to TikTok, he said the pin was a message to Aussie workers that we are “all just numbers in the system”.

His video has been viewed more than 10,000 times.

People voiced frustration and outrage in the comments section, some calling the pin an “insult” to Nick’s mother’s service.

Nine.com.au understands Commonwealth Bank provides employees who hit certain tenure milestones with a clothing pin denoting the length of their service.

The pin can be worn at work.

“While we are not able to comment on the individual circumstances of current or former employees, we do have a long-standing service recognition program designed to celebrate and reward the tenure of our people,” a CBA spokesperson told nine.com.au.

“In the case of significant milestones such as 45 years, our people receive a personal email of recognition, while celebrations can include a range of events such as morning or afternoon teas hosted by a senior leader, lunches, dinners and gifts such as flowers.

“Employees also benefit from our staff rewards scheme through the provision of points that have a dollar value at 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service.

“For eligible employees who reach 40 years of service, they receive 4000 recognition points, which is equal to $4000 in value.”

Despite some unpopular moves, Commonwealth Bank remains one of the top five most trusted brands in Australia, according to a survey released last month.
