Dramatic new aerial images of Bundaberg captured before and during the peak of last week’s floods reveal the extent of the devastation in the Queensland city.
The Burnett River peaked at a major flood level of 7.4 metres on Wednesday, March 11, sending water surging down streets and into more than 350 homes and businesses, including the Mitre 10 store.

As floodwaters engulfed parts of the city, boats became the sole means of transportation, navigating streets lined with floating appliances and even a lawnmower catcher. The surreal scene was a stark reminder of nature’s power and unpredictability.

Two Chinese backpackers on their way to a fruit picking job were killed in the North Burnett region when their car was swept away by surging floodwaters.

Last Tuesday, residents of Bundaberg faced an urgent evacuation order as rising water levels threatened their safety. The Burnett River, a normally tranquil feature of the landscape, reached a peak of 7.4 meters on Wednesday. This marked the city’s most severe flooding since the catastrophic deluge of 2013, which left a lasting impact on the community.
