A significant breakthrough in DNA technology has resulted in the arrest of a 65-year-old man nearly 30 years after a young boy was reportedly sexually assaulted on the Central Coast of New South Wales.

The incident, which allegedly involved a nine-year-old boy being assaulted by an unidentified individual, took place on March 26, 1996.

At the time, police conducted a thorough investigation but were unable to identify or apprehend a suspect.

However, recent advancements in forensic DNA techniques have enabled detectives to make a significant arrest. The man was taken into custody at Bathurst Police Station.

He now faces serious charges, including engaging in sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 10 and attempting to do so.

He was refused bail and will face the Bail Division Court 4 today.

At the time of the alleged sexual assault, the man would have been 35 or 36.
