Decoding the 2026 Federal Budget: Visualizing It as a $100 Bill

While the budget may be a hefty document filled with extensive data, it can be more digestible when visualized as a $100 bill, illustrating how the government allocates your tax contributions.

This year’s budget outlines federal spending of $833.2 billion, marking a $47.5 billion rise. A significant portion of this expenditure is directed towards pensions and social assistance initiatives, which together account for over one-third of the country’s total spending.

The largest slice of the budget pie, 37.1%, is dedicated to social security and welfare payments, mirroring last year’s allocation. This sector continues to command the lion’s share of governmental expenses.

By 2030, social security payments are anticipated to represent nearly 40% of all government spending. This growth is propelled by increasing needs in disability support and aged care services.

The government has also forecasted a spend of 19.6 per cent for “other purposes” which include expenses incurred in servicing public debt and natural disaster relief.

The remainder of spending or “all other services” includes housing, transport and energy.
