Diving instructor, 22, opens up about dating a 57-year-old divorcee with four children: ‘I get mistaken for his daughter all the time’

  • Diving instructor Brightnye Quayle, 22, has been dating James, 57, for 14 months
  • The pair met on a drunken night out at a casino and live in Queensland together
  • Many have criticised Brightnye for being with James for his ‘money’
  • The pair often get mistaken for family members rather than girlfriend/boyfriend

A couple who often get mistaken for father and daughter because of their 35-year age gap have been forced to defend their love on social media after legions of fans called their relationship ‘fake’.

Diving instructor and model Brightnye Quayle, 22, has been dating James, 57, for 14 months now after the pair met on a night out at a casino.

Brightnye, who was born in Christchurch, New Zealand, but now lives with James in Queensland, decided to purchase nine sandwiches at the bar on that particular evening, which piqued her now-older boyfriend’s interest.

‘We actually met totally organically at the casino. I was the girl who bought nine sandwiches because it seemed like the right thing to do at the time,’ Brightnye said on their shared TikTok account @agegap50.

‘He came up behind me and said that I should come talk to him, so I did.’

James added: ‘I thought anyone who is buying nine sandwiches was either starving to death or needed to be spoken to.’

James was married for 30 years before meeting Brightnye and has four daughters who share mixed feelings about their father’s new relationship.

‘Two of them are okay, one is sitting on the fence and the other one would like to murder you with a pitchfork, which isn’t very nice. But we don’t mind, we’re in love,’ James said.

Brightnye confirmed her mother was going to stay with them for a week at the end of August so they’d know how she felt at that point in time.

The loved-up couple started making videos on social media to explain their partnership on August 3, quickly earning a huge following.

Many of their commentators label James as her ‘grandfather’ or ‘dad’ and question whether Brightnye is only in the relationship ‘for money’.

‘I get mistaken for his daughter a lot,’ Brightnye said.

‘The comments are interesting. A lot of them are about money, it’s ridiculous. I was married to my wife for 30 years, bought her a Maserati, paid for everything… what is the difference?’ James added.

‘Every relationship, well certainly traditional relationships where the man looks after the woman, of course you’re going to spend money, it’s not an issue. And not relevant.’

Brightnye teased: ‘And we’re off to get me a Porche’.

On August 17 Brightnye took to TikTok once more to say the pair were taking a three month break from TikTok because an ‘exciting’ opportunity had come up which required their full attention.

Many of her fans wondered whether the pair had been asked to participate in a TV series but they won’t have answers to their questions until the end of the year.

‘We’ll be back after our three month break, it’s a secret. We’ll share details with you when we get back,’ she said.
