A significant security breach occurred at South Australia’s largest correctional facility when a drone reportedly delivered a package to an inmate.
According to 9News, the drone infiltrated the airspace of Adelaide’s Yatala Prison around 8 p.m. last night.
The drone was seen hovering outside the third floor of the B division, where an inmate allegedly extended his arm through a barred window to snag the delivery.
The SA Department for Correctional Services acknowledged the breach today, confirming an attempt to smuggle contraband into the prison.
The department noted that staff acted swiftly, managing to secure evidence related to the incident.
The incident was reported to the police.
9News was told officers uncovered a concealed mobile phone, with a battery and charger, in an inmate’s cell.
They also seized a glass pipe and illegal drugs during the search.
The inmate at the centre of the incident is believed to have been moved to the ultra-secure G division.
Police are investigating how the drone flew into prison airspace and who was flying it. `
