Attempts to obtain a waterfront view by poisoning trees have backfired in Sydney’s south.

Bayside Council has placed a shipping container at Brighton-Le-Sands, deliberately blocking the foreshore.

To reduce the eyesore, the container has now been decorated with a mural, with plans to also plant two large pine trees.

It will also install a sign to “ensure no one benefits from an improved bay view”.

Council bosses admitted their moves after the vandalism in the beachside suburb, which can carry fines of up to $1 million.

“Council is actively investigating these incidents and has promptly installed a shipping container at the site to block the desired view,” it said on Facebook.

“Additionally, large signage will be put up to deter vandalism.”

In 2021, when trees were hacked down with chainsaws to improve views, the council also moved shipping containers to the site “to stop the vandals from gaining their desired water views”, Bayside Council said on its website.

“These shipping containers are still in place.

“One of council’s strategies to improve the local tree canopy is to plant two similar new trees for every tree that has been removed or poisoned.”
