NSW Police have pepper-sprayed an 87-year-old man at a nursing home in Sydney’s south-west, a senior officers are now investigating the incident.

Authorities responded to an urgent call at an aged care facility shortly before 8 PM yesterday. The call concerned the welfare of a resident who had reportedly become a threat to himself and others.

The individual in question was allegedly wielding a “metal ornament,” posing a danger to those around him. Staff members on the scene attempted to de-escalate the situation, but their efforts were met with hostility, as the man swung the object at them.

In response to the escalating threat, the staff took precautionary measures by locking themselves in a room to ensure their safety.

Upon the police’s arrival, they encountered the resident in the building’s foyer, still in possession of the metal object, which he appeared ready to use.

When officers arrived at the home, they found the man in the foyer and still armed with the metal object.

After refusing police direction to drop the weapon, he was pepper-sprayed.

The man was ultimately restrained and assessed by paramedics before being taken to Campbeltown Hospital for further treatment.

There were no injuries reported to other residents, staff or officers during the incident.

Camden Police Area Command is reviewing the incident.
