Sandy Weill, the former CEO of American bank Citigroup, and his wife announced the donation to the University of California (UC), Davis today, one of the largest donations to veterinary medicine worldwide.

The university’s veterinary hospital will soon bear the name of a generous donor couple.

Through the Weill Family Foundation, the couple has contributed a substantial donation. While they have previously supported numerous medical initiatives, this recent contribution hits closer to home.

In 2018, their dog, Angel, was diagnosed with lymphoma and received treatment at UC Davis.

“Angel’s care at UC Davis profoundly impacted our family,” Joan expressed in a statement.

“Over the years, as Sandy and I engaged more with the school, we were consistently inspired by its visionary leadership, dedication to collaborative science, commitment to addressing complex health challenges, and heartfelt devotion to animals and the families who cherish them.”

Angel has since passed away, but the pair now own another dog called Sweet Pea.

UC Davis announced the donation would be used to build a new teaching hospital, as well as supporting clinical research.

“This gift empowers us to drive discoveries, expand access to world-class education and develop new insights at the intersection of veterinary and human health,” Dr Mark Stetter from UC Davis said.
