Trent Merrin, a former National Rugby League standout, has recently been brought before the court on charges concerning the alleged theft of $140,000 in cryptocurrency.

The 36-year-old, who previously shined in State of Origin matches and for the Australian Test team, made his appearance at Port Kembla Local Court, located on New South Wales’ South Coast. However, he refrained from entering a plea during this session.

His legal representative, Harry Lollback, requested a one-week postponement to allow further clarification on certain aspects of the case.

Lollback anticipates entering a plea on Merrin’s behalf at the upcoming court hearing scheduled for December 10.

Merrin’s arrest came in November 2025, following an extensive year-long investigation conducted by the police.

He was charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception and was granted bail.

Police allege Merrin accessed a 29-year-old man’s account, believed to be a friend, and transferred $140,000 worth of Bitcoin.

He also played seven Tests for Australia and more than 150 games for the St George Illawarra Dragons, winning the 2010 NRL Grand Final with the club.

In 2015, he signed a five-year contract with the Penrith Panthers and then played one season in the English Super League team Leeds.

Merrin retired from the sport in April 2021, aged 32.
