Excavator-Laden Truck Strikes Overhead Bridge, Forcing Major Highway Closure

A major highway on Queensland‘s Sunshine Coast has been closed after a truck carrying an excavator crashed into an overhead bridge.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene of an accident on the Bruce Highway near Tanawha shortly before 9 a.m. (AEST).

According to police reports, a truck heading south and carrying an excavator collided with the underside of the Ilkey Road overpass.

The overpass has a vehicle height restriction of 5.4 meters.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.

Authorities have implemented several detours, and the southbound lanes of the highway are anticipated to remain shut for the majority of the day.

According to government transport update website Qld Traffic, nearby Ilkley Road is also closed and diversions are in place via Maroochydore Road southbound.

Motorists have been told to expect long delays.

Sunshine Coast Police senior sergeant Scott Wiggins said the crash appeared to have caused “significant damage” to the bridge.

“The damage is currently being inspected by engineers,” Wiggins said.
