A 20-year-old Adelaide woman has died after being struck by a car on North East Road in Hillcrest, prompting an urgent police investigation.

The incident occurred just before midnight, with CCTV footage capturing the collision.

According to South Australia Police, the victim was hit by a silver sedan, and the driver fled the scene without stopping.

“What happened at Hillcrest last night is a tragic situation where a young woman’s lost her life,” Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said.

Vision of the incident appears to show a police car arriving only seconds later – but senior police insist the offender’s car was not being chased or followed.

“There was no police pursuit. The police were not following that vehicle. It was simply a coincidence that police were in the very near vicinity at the time,” Stevens said.

An officer started CPR on the victim, but she could not be revived.

The local community has expressed fury at the driver, with one person describing their actions as “atrocious. Totally heartless”.

Another witness added, “It’ll be better in the long run if he turns himself in, but he’s obviously a coward”.

Police are trying to piece together the victim’s final movements in the lead up to the crash, appealing for anyone with dashcam or information to contact them.

Authorities are urging the driver to come forward.

While the victim is understood to be from overseas, details regarding her living arrangements in Australia are unclear.
