Pedestrian dead, two others injured after driver loses control in Melbourne

A pedestrian has died and two others have been rushed to hospital after they were hit by a car in Melbourne’s east.

Victoria Police understands a car lost control on Coleman Road in Wantirna South around 12.20pm and struck three pedestrians before driving through a fence.

One of the pedestrians has died at the scene.

A second person has been transported to hospital in a critical condition and a third person was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle was not seriously injured but has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will investigate.

The incident is not believed to be intentional, police said earlier.

A caller to 3AW claimed a car mounted the footpath and hit multiple people “at high speed”.

“There’s four ambulances there, police galore and all the roads are blocked off. It’s quite horrendous,” 3AW caller Anne said.

“Then the car took off down past near the playground.”

Aerial footage shows emergency services setting up a tent in a park, immediately adjacent to play equipment.

A section of fence at the park has been knocked down.

Further down the road, a flattened street sign can be seen next to police tape.

Detectives will investigate the exact circumstances of the collision.
