A Mormon church in Sydney’s west has been gutted by fire in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters were called to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Hebersham at around 3am after reports of a huge fire.

It was reported that there were fires in three sectors of the complex, with video footage showing the flames towering high and being clearly visible on the street and to nearby residents.

“We found the administration side of this building well-alight,” Inspector Steve Perkins from Fire and Rescue NSW said.

He said up to 120 personnel were involved in fighting the fire and credited their work to halt the spread of the fire to some areas of the church.

“They did a lot of great work to try and cut the fire off from progressing into he main auditorium and chapel area of the church, and they were successful in that,” he said.

“We were able to save a good portion of the building.”

There was no one inside the church at the time, and fire crews say everyone who is a member of the church has been accounted for.

The cause of the fire is currently being investigated.
