John Setka, the former head of a construction union, now faces additional charges linked to claims of intimidation towards officials within the CFMEU’s administration. The charges add another layer to the unfolding legal drama surrounding him.
Authorities contend that he dispatched a series of emails laden with threats, offensive language, and abuse, aimed at a CFMEU administrator. These communications allegedly followed a formal request for documents issued on October 27, and a subsequent reminder sent the next day, October 28.
During his arrest, detectives confiscated a mobile phone and an iPad from Setka’s residence, potentially gathering crucial evidence to support their case.
Taskforce Hawk detectives have now charged Setka with two counts related to the misuse of telecommunications to offend. This development signifies an intensifying investigation into his conduct.
The investigators claim that on October 30, Setka directed messages, characterized as offensive, at an investigator who had been appointed by the CFMEU administration. These allegations underscore the severity of the charges and the ongoing scrutiny of Setka’s actions.
He has been bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court on January 30.
Setka quit the CFMEU in July 2024 following explosive allegations of criminal conduct made in a joint investigation by 60 Minutes and The Age.
At the time, Setka told 9News he decided to step down to “stop the barrage and all the false accusations” about the scandal-riddled union.
He has always denied all allegations of misconduct.
Barrister Mark Irving KC was appointed as the union’s administrator to oversee its financial, legal and business affairs.
The union could remain under administration for up to five years.
