Police reported that around 12:30 p.m., a gas tanker lost control on the Princes Highway in Carnegie, creating a scene of chaos and destruction. The tanker careened into multiple vehicles and smashed into power poles before finally coming to a halt in the front yard of a nearby house, narrowly missing the residence itself.
Eyewitness Martin Hallcroft recounted the dramatic moments, saying, “It knocked down a powerline, and there was this intense blue flash. I had no idea what I was witnessing. It was sheer madness.” He added, “Then came the screeching sound of metal colliding with metal. Before I knew it, we were all outside, staring at our car reduced to a crumpled heap.”
Fortunately, the house narrowly avoided by the tanker was unoccupied at the time of the accident, preventing what could have been a much more dire situation.
“Then I just heard metal on metal. Next thing I know we’re all outside and our car is a crumpled heap.”
Nobody was inside the home at the time.
“We had to ensure that everybody in the homes adjacent to the property stayed within their home,” Fire Rescue Victoria firefighter Peter Quinn said.
The circumstances surrounding the crash are unclear at this stage.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance (MICA) paramedics attended the scene.
The truck driver, a 44-year-old Kilsyth man, and his male passenger were transported to hospital for observation.
The driver of one of the vehicles involved, a 50-year-old female, was also transported to hospital in a stable condition with minor injuries.
