The Gulf of Mexico will be renamed the Gulf of America on Google Maps, following new US President Donald Trump’s order.
Trump mentioned the renaming as last week, where he added: “America will reclaim its rightful place as the greatest, most powerful, most respected nation on earth, inspiring the awe and admiration of the entire world.”
In an X post on Monday, Google said its Maps service would reflect the change once it is officially updated in the US Geographic Names System.
The change will be visible to Google Maps users in the US, but it will remain listed as Gulf of Mexico for those accessing the platform from Mexico.
Outside of the two countries, users will see both names.

Similarly, Google will also label the highest mountain in the United States as Mount McKinley, after William McKinley, the US’ 25th president.

Mount McKinley had been the mountain’s name from 1917 until 2015, when it was renamed Denali, reflecting what the local Koyukon people who inhabit the area around the mountain have called it for centuries.
When it was renamed in 2015, then-secretary of the interior Sally Jewell said: “The name Denali has been official for use by the State of Alaska since 1975, but even more importantly, the mountain has been known as Denali for generations.”
Last week, Trump requiring the name to be reverted within 30 days.
