Large parts of NSW will be hit by a prolonged period of rain and storms after dry weather to start 2026.

The central and southern regions of the state have been experiencing some of the driest conditions ever recorded for this time of year, but a shift in weather is on the way.

The impact has already been seen, with Sydney copping around 3.4mm of rain in around an hour last night, and rain and storms are set to close out the rest of the week across the state.

Later today, Sydney could see storms bringing up to 15mm of rainfall, with the downpour intensifying over the weekend.

The southern region is expected to bear the brunt of the storm. Meteorologist Joel Pippard notes that the remnants of a tropical cyclone are affecting areas far removed from its original formation.

Rainfall is set to be heavy on New South Wales' South Coast region.

“As this system moves westward, it will trigger scattered to widespread thunderstorms on Thursday and develop a coastal trough off the NSW coast,” Pippard explained.

He added, “Moisture from the tropics and the Tasman Sea will result in heavy rainfall along the NSW coast, particularly in the far south, with a significant swell impacting the coast from Friday through next Tuesday.”

Rainfall of up to 110mm could hit Merimbula and Eden today, according to figures from the Bureau of Meteorology.

Bega could receive 70mm of rain today and 90mm tomorrow, with Weatherzone predicting the town could receive up to 200mm by Tuesday next week.
