Good Samaritans have restrained a driver who allegedly tried to run from a smashed-up car after it crashed into several others on a busy Melbourne road.

In a startling incident in Pascoe Vale, a silver Toyota Camry was observed driving erratically before it caused a series of collisions on Sydney Road in Coburg shortly after midday, according to police reports.

Witness accounts suggest the vehicle was allegedly traveling on the wrong side of the road as it approached Bell Street, sideswiping “five or six cars” in its path, as reported by a caller to 3AW.

“The entire car is covered in dents, and its windscreen is shattered,” said Craig, a witness who called into the radio station.

Craig described the driver as a young man with a beard, wearing a grey t-shirt, who was alone in the vehicle. “He was driving like an absolute maniac, hitting cars and even sideswiping a tram,” Craig recounted.

“He just barreled through the intersection, and I was nearly caught in his path,” Craig added, highlighting the reckless nature of the incident.

“Half of Sydney Road’s come to a grinding halt up towards the Bell Street area.”

The car came to a stop next to Coburg Market, where police said the driver, a 27-year-old Broadmeadows man, attempted to flee the scene on foot.

The alleged offender was loaded into a divvy van at the scene.

He was restrained by passersby until police arrived.

The man was given medical treatment at the scene before he was seen being loaded into a divvy van.

The investigation remains ongoing.
