The pursuit ignited on the Great Western Highway in Wentworthville earlier today, as occupants of a vehicle recklessly discarded jerry cans from their car windows while speeding along the M4 motorway near Silverwater.
In response, police launched a coordinated effort involving several patrol vehicles and a helicopter to intercept the fleeing Audi. They eventually closed in on the vehicle near Hill Road in Homebush.
The three individuals inside the car attempted to escape on foot, but their flight was short-lived as police swiftly apprehended and detained them.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, officers reportedly discovered a handgun and a semi-automatic weapon. Authorities suspect these firearms are linked to recent shootings and an arson attack in Panania last month.
The vehicle is also under investigation for its suspected involvement in multiple shootings at residences across Western Sydney during the past week.
“We actually had police out today trying to identify routes that that vehicle had taken as part of the shootings,” Detective Inspector Brad Abdy said.
Police this evening confirmed the men in the car were a 28-year-old from Maroubra, a 24-year-old from Shalvey, and a 25-year-old from Wilmot.
They are yet to be charged.
Police are still investigating and are urging anyone with dashcam footage of the chase to come forward.
