A tense scene unfolded in the heart of the CBD yesterday when a crowd of 2,500 protesters was swiftly evacuated around 12:30 PM. This urgent action was prompted by the unsettling incident of a device being hurled into the gathering at Forrest Place.
A 31-year-old Warwick resident, from the northern suburbs of Perth, was promptly apprehended at the location. He reportedly informed police officers that the device might contain explosives, triggering immediate concern and action.
Fortunately, the device did not explode, and no injuries were reported during the incident. However, police investigations have revealed that the homemade improvised explosive device was particularly alarming. It contained a dangerous concoction of volatile chemicals and was lined with nails and metal ball bearings, enhancing its potential for destruction.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch, speaking on radio station 6PR this morning, stated, “We will allege that the device was intended to detonate upon impact, though the reasons it failed to do so remain unclear at this time.”
“We will allege that that devIce was designed to explode upon impact, but for reasons not yet known, it didn’t,” WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch told radio station 6PR this morning.
Police raided a home in Warwick yesterday where they allegedly found chemicals and materials commonly used to make homemade explosives.
The 31-year-old man was today charged with making or possesssing explosives under suspcious cirumstances and one count of an unlawful act or omission with intent to harm.
