Police have charged a man and seized multiple weapons after he allegedly tried to break into a Melbourne home where a woman and three children were sleeping.

In the early hours of the morning, police responded to a disturbance on Savige Street in Ascot Vale at approximately 2:05 a.m., following reports of a man allegedly attempting to break down a front door.

At the location, officers apprehended the individual and confiscated several items, including a sledgehammer, an iron bar, and a fake firearm concealed in a black sheet.

Fortunately, the woman and three children present in the house during the incident were unharmed.

Authorities reported that the man had apparently entered the wrong residence by mistake.

Subsequently, he faced charges including aggravated burglary, possession of tools for stealing, and committing an indictable offense while on bail.

He is expected to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today.
