Iran Shuts Down Strait of Hormuz Once More, Posing Risk to Ceasefire Stability

On Wednesday, Iran once again shut down the vital Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for Israeli military actions against the Hezbollah group in Lebanon. This move has cast significant doubt over the stability of a ceasefire aimed at concluding over a month of conflict.

Both the United States and Iran declared themselves victors following the agreement, while global leaders breathed a sigh of relief. However, the situation remains tense as drones and missiles continue to target Iran and countries in the Gulf region.

Meanwhile, Israel has escalated its offensive in Lebanon, launching strikes on several commercial and residential neighborhoods in Beirut without prior notice. The attacks resulted in the deaths of at least 112 people and left hundreds more injured, marking one of the most lethal days in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

The resurgence of violence threatens to derail what U.S. Vice President JD Vance described as a “fragile” peace arrangement.

General Seyed Majid Mousavi, the aerospace commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, expressed on X that “aggression towards Lebanon is aggression towards Iran.” He revealed that Iranian forces are gearing up for a “heavy response,” although he did not provide specific details.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said American and Israeli forces had achieved a “capital V military victory” and that the Iranian military no longer posed a significant threat to US forces or the region.

The Iranian military said the country forced Israel and the US to accept its “proposed conditions and surrender”.
