The budget airline will dump its carry-on weight limit in favour of a size-based carry-on baggage model.
In a recent move aimed at enhancing efficiency and customer satisfaction, Jetstar has revealed that storing carry-on bags in overhead lockers will soon come with a fee of up to $52 per journey.
Stephanie Tully, the chief executive of Jetstar, explained that the new carry-on baggage fees are part of a broader strategy to speed up the boarding process and ensure more timely flight departures.
Tully emphasized, “Our updated carry-on baggage policy offers customers greater flexibility while helping us maintain affordable ticket prices.”
She added, “Essentially, you’ll only pay for what you utilize — traveling lighter will lower your costs, but there’s always the option to add more if necessary.”
This policy shift is the result of “extensive research and feedback,” according to Jetstar, which highlighted common complaints about bag weighing and the struggle for overhead locker space.
What’s changing and what you’ll pay now
From 2 February, Jetstar will lift its 7kg carry-on weight limit in favour of a size-based carry-on baggage model.
Cabin baggage scales used to weigh passengers’ carry-on bags before boarding will no longer be “routinely” used, the airline said.
Passengers will be able to bring one small bag to place under the seat, such as a backpack, handbag or laptop bag. That bag can weigh up to 10kg and be up to 40 x 30 x 20cm. Any bags larger than that will incur a fee.
Passengers who want to store a larger carry-on bag in overhead lockers will be charged between $25 and $52 one-way, depending on the flight route, for “limited” priority carry-on.
Jetstar said the fee for a one-way flight from Launceston to Sydney would start at $25, rising to $33 for a one-way flight between Sydney and Melbourne and $52 for a one-way flight between Cairns and Tokyo.
Priority boarding will be provided for passengers who pay for the carry-on option.
