The Chifley MP suffered fractures and a concussion after being rear-ended at 80km/h on a motorway in western Sydney.
A prominent Labor backbencher has survived a motorway collision, emerging without “serious injury.”
Ed Husic, who represents the Chifley area, was driving home from his office in western Sydney on Tuesday when he was caught in a significant traffic accident.
According to paramedics at the scene, a truck struck the rear of Husic’s vehicle at approximately 80 km/h while on the M7 motorway.
The Labor official suffered only minor cuts, fractures, and a concussion and was promptly transported to Westmead Hospital for further evaluation.
After being discharged on Wednesday, Husic is now collaborating with police by providing a statement regarding the incident.
In a post on Instagram, he said he was “extremely grateful to walk away from the accident without more serious injury”, and will take a short period of leave from parliamentary duties to fully recover.
“Mr Husic thanked the doctors, nurses and paramedics at Westmead Hospital for providing him with outstanding care and thanked his family and friends for their support, especially during his hospital stay,” the statement said.
Federal parliament is set to resume on Tuesday after a month-long winter break.
In July, the backbencher used an appearance at Labor’s national conference to push for stronger criticism of Israel in the party’s platform, but the motion was quashed by factional leaders.
Husic was a minister in Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s first term, but was scrapped from the frontbench shortly after the 2025 election in a factional deal.
