Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán expressed a deepened camaraderie with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a recent encounter, reportedly stating, “Our friendship has reached such heights that I’m willing to assist in any way possible.”
“In any matter you need help with, consider me at your service,” Orbán further assured Putin, as per sources.
This gesture of alliance was underscored by an allusion to Aesop’s fable of the mouse and the lion, where a small mouse proves instrumental in rescuing a powerful lion from a trap.
According to the transcript, Putin found amusement in Orbán’s analogy, responding with a laugh.
Orbán remains the most amicable European leader towards Putin, consistently opposing Western support for Ukraine. While he has voiced strong criticism against the European Union, he has yet to pursue Hungary’s withdrawal from the economic union.
The reported comments emerge as US Vice President JD Vance jets into the country to boost Orbán’s re-election efforts in the biggest challenge to his grip on power in years.
Indeed, the two adminstrations have drawn so close in recent years that Orbán told reporters this period was a “golden era” of US-Hungary relations, marked by growing economic and defence cooperation.
Meanwhile, Vance underlined the “moral cooperation” between the two adminstrations, explicitly referring to the “Christian civilisation and Christian values” they share at a joint press conference on Tuesday.
It’s unusual for a high-profile American official to visit a country so close to an important election, and it’s seen as a signal of the lengths the US administration is willing to go to help an embattled global ally.
