French President Emmanuel Macron has accepted the resignation of Laurence des Cars as director of the Louvre, according to an official statement. Macron commended des Cars for her “responsible decision” during a period when the renowned museum requires stability and revitalized leadership to advance significant projects, including security enhancements and modernization efforts.
In a startling incident last October, thieves executed a brazen heist in under eight minutes, making off with €88 million (approximately $146.8 million) worth of crown jewels from the world’s most frequented museum, leaving many in disbelief.
Des Cars, who took over one of the most esteemed roles in the museum sector in 2021, was appointed as the director of the Louvre.
Following the robbery, des Cars had initially offered her resignation, but it was declined by the culture minister.
Reflecting on the incident, she stated in November, “I was confronted with a tragic, sudden, and violent reality for the Louvre. As the head of the institution, witnessing the dedicated efforts of our team, it felt appropriate to tender my resignation.”
Macron thanked des Cars for “her work and commitment” and said he wanted to give her a new mission focused on cooperation among major museums, the statement said.
It didn’t say if she accepted.
