The Japan Meteorological Agency has reported that a significant earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, with its epicenter located about 80 kilometers offshore and at a depth of 54 kilometers.

A tsunami warning was activated and displayed prominently on televisions across the region after the tremor shook northeastern Japan late on Monday. The warning followed a powerful earthquake that rattled the area, prompting alerts and precautionary measures. Sources from AP and Getty, including photographer Eugene Hoshiko, captured the alerts being broadcasted in Yokohama, near Tokyo.
The earthquake was recorded as an “upper 6” on Japan’s seismic intensity scale, which ranges from 1 to 7. This level of intensity indicates a tremor strong enough to make standing difficult, forcing individuals to crawl to move. The city of Hachinohe in Aomori Prefecture experienced this severe shaking.
