In a concerted effort, approximately 200 firefighters have been dispatched to combat a significant factory blaze in Sydney’s western region. Authorities have cautioned that the fire might persist for several days.

The emergency services received a call around 10:50 PM last night regarding a fire at a waste management facility located on Kurrajong Street in North St Marys.

As the fire erupted, explosions were reported, with their impact being felt kilometers away in Penrith.

A massive fireball was observed towering above the site, soaring up to 150 meters into the sky.

Officials warn that the fire could continue to burn for days due to the presence of hazardous materials at the recycling center, which are currently fueling the flames.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene for minor burns, with fire crews being praised for their valiant efforts to contain the raging fire.

“There’s been some amazing firefighting going on,” Fire Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said.

“We’ve had an incredibly large explosion, and so luckily all of our firefighters were able to be safe through that.”

Large chunks of rock were thrown into the air in the initial explosion, hindering initial efforts to combat the massive blaze.

Explosions had continued throughout the morning, with locals warned to avoid the area and to keep their windows closed, as smoke continues to billow from the fire.

Whilst the cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage, police are conducting their own investigations into the incident.

A 200 metre exclusion zone has been put in place, with motorists urged to avoid the area.

Police are urging anyone with information on the fire or who was in the area at the time with phone or dashcam footage to contact Penrith Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
