A 65-year-old Melbourne man with alleged links to a Vietnamese drug trafficking syndicate has been charged after the failed importation of 92kg of drugs and 477,000 cigarettes.

A 65-year-old Melbourne man faces life in prison after allegedly trying to import 92kg of drugs and 477,000 cigarettes disguised as clothes.

Border force officers in Sydney and Melbourne say they uncovered the illegal shipments spread across four separate consignments in February.

The first three shipments in Sydney came from Vietnam and were labelled as containing leggings, hats and socks, they said.

Officials say they found about 55kg of meth, 35kg of heroin and 2kg of MDMA hidden inside.

Federal police found the shipments had similar billing details.

The fourth shipment arrived in Melbourne on February 25.

Border force officers found cigarettes, meth, and small amounts of MDMA and heroin inside.

An investigation into the phone number linked to the consignment allegedly led police to an alleged Vietnamese drug trafficking organisation.

The charged man had travelled from Melbourne to Sydney several times in February, allegedly with one of the phone. 

Police stormed his home in Ascot Vale in Melbourne on Thursday.

They seized about $130,000 in cash, 3kg of meth and 1kg of cocaine, and four mobiles.

He was charged with possession of a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug reasonably suspected of having been unlawfully imported and dealing in property reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime worth $100,000 or more.

He faced Melbourne Magistrates Court yesterday.

He faces life in prison for the drug charge, and 10 years for the proceeds of crime offence.
