Detectives are investigating the “brutal and violent” death of a man outside a shopping centre in Brisbane.

A member of the public called officers to the centre on Trevally Crescent in Manly West shortly about 2.17am today.

A man in his 40s was found with critical injuries and was declared dead shortly later.

Detective Inspector Wayne Francis told the media this afternoon that the man appeared to have suffered a “brutal and violent” attack.

“At this stage of investigation, whilst in these early stages, we believe that the victim was on foot prior to the attack,” he said.

A 45-year-old man was taken into custody in relation to other matters near the scene and is assisting police with inquiries.

Francis said police are working to determine whether the two men knew each other.

“It is an active line of investigation for us to compare that event, for which he was taken into custody for, as well as the [alleged] murder investigation,” he said.

A large number of police are patrolling Manly West today as they appeal to the public for CCTV or dashcam footage around the area between 12am to 3am today.

This includes vision of anyone walking along Trevally Crescent, Radford Road and Miles Crescent.

“Whilst you might not think it shows anything, it could be very compelling for us,” Francis said.

Police are trying to contact the man’s family as investigations continue.
