A man has been charged with arson after a Western Australian childcare centre went up in flames, resulting in $500,000 worth of damage.

A 35-year-old man is accused of breaking into a childcare centre on Truarn Street in Mandurah around 6:30 p.m. yesterday, where he reportedly set several items on fire, igniting a substantial blaze.

The flames spread rapidly, engulfing a patio area and causing significant damage to the main structure of the facility.

Authorities estimate that the fire resulted in damages amounting to approximately $500,000.

The suspect has been apprehended and faces charges of criminal damage by fire and burglary.

In addition, police claim that during the arrest, the man assaulted an officer.

He was then charged with one count of assaulting an officer and two counts of obstructing officers.

The injured police officer was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been released.

The charged man will appear in Perth Magistrates Court today.
