A Sydney man is facing charges after reportedly making violent threats towards a Jewish community member during a flight from Bali to Sydney.
The 19-year-old, hailing from Condell Park, allegedly directed antisemitic gestures and threats at an individual he recognized as being part of the Jewish community, according to police reports.
The Australian Federal Police (AFP) stated they were called to assist by the airline during the incident.
Upon the flight’s arrival at Sydney International Airport, the man was detained and charged with threatening force or violence against a group member or their close associates.
This charge carries a potential sentence of up to five years in prison.
The 19-year-old will face court today and the AFP reminded the community that there is no current or impending threat to the community.
Police did not specify if the alleged threat was related to Sunday’s terror attack at Bondi, in which 15 people died as two gunmen opened fire on the Chanukkah By The Sea event.
